Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
