Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Criticism
Figures from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Party
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
