Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and positive temperament brought him a vast and loyal following.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
