Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a memoir in the coming weeks titled A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts the period endured behind bars.

This news was made shortly after the ex-leader was released as he contests the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to secure election campaign funds linked to the government of Muammar Gaddafi.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“In prison one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he notes in one passage, implying the book is more about his reflections while in seclusion rather than extensive analysis regarding the strained and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing at the prison, where one hears a lot to hear,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

At his release request hearing, the former leader had appeared remotely from a room in prison, describing his time inside as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this ordeal bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It has an impact all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he would use his time to write a book.

Cell Library

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Count of Monte Cristo, in which an innocent man ends up incarcerated then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space of about nine sq metres including private facilities at the correctional facility in the city. Security personnel stayed in the next cell.

It was stated that he consumed only yoghurts during his stay worried that prison cuisine could have been tampered with. He had facilities to cook for himself yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who saw him regularly each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing his safety would improve out of prison than inside. “He has faced threats against his life, heard shouts during nighttime plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began on 21 October after a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure political donations for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the verdict, and another court case is scheduled for next spring.
