The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the popular series coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
